Air India became the first airline to start commercial operations from the recently opened Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, at Durgapur, 170 kms from Kolkata with a flight connecting Kolkata to Durgapur and back. The inaugural flight was operated by Alliance Air, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India, with a 48-seater ATR-42 aircraft.
Alliance Air flight AI 9713 will leave Kolkata at 5.05 pm from the NSCBI Airport to reach Durgapur at 5.40 pm. The return flight AI9714 will depart Durgapur at 6.05 pm to arrive Kolkata at 6.40 pm. The flight will operate on the sector daily except on Fridays.
With this connection, Air India has scripted a new chapter in the aviation annals and industrial canvas of West Bengal by improving air-connectivity across Bengal and Kolkata. The flight will save passengers from Durgapur the time-consuming road journey to Kolkata and provide them air connectivity to Air India’s Delhi and Mumbai flights the same evening, and accelerate growth in the region.
The 650-acre Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, developed by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL), is India’s first operational private Greenfield airport under the country’s Greenfield Airport Policy. The flight will meet a long-standing need of the residents in the Asansol-Durgapur belt boasting power-intensive industries like mining, iron & steel, metalwork, engineering, petrochemicals, and telecommunications. and industrial sector establishments in the belt. Durgapur city is home to some of the largest industrial units in the state, Durgapur Steel Plant, an integrated steel plant of SAIL; Alloy Steels Plant of SAIL and CMERI, a CSIR laboratory. The connection to Kolkata will also benefit students and Public and Private sector employees working in the Durgapur–Asansol planning area, besides boosting the industrialization and urban needs of the region.
