Mojjo, Skyview Hotel Bangkok – A Review By Punam Mohandas
Mojjo is the Latin-inspired rooftop restaurant at the Skyview Hotel Bangkok, located on Sukhumvit soi 24 and part of the EM District that also comprises the Emporium and EM Quartier malls. Despite this, the restaurant truly has its own mojo and holds its own among the other five-star hotels and upmarket eateries in the vicinity – and it’s easy to see why.
Mojjo has a quite unique atmosphere. At first glance, it looks like some old colonial club and yet, there is a very definite contemporary vibe, so that it’s hard to categorise it. One enters a room with pale blue walls, high tables as well as armchair seating, and walks through to the bar and DJ station. The bar area has the most beautiful, old fashioned metal hanging candelabra that lends a somewhat vintage, nostalgic air to the space; one is reminded of the eternal line from ‘Casablanca’: “of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine”. Moreover, the hostesses are strikingly attired in slim-fitting, off-shoulder red dresses, while the male staff wear black shirts and red pants, adding to the air of mystique.
And thence to the piece de resistance, the rooftop area, with its black and white parquet flooring, and bar stool or cane chair seating. It’s a very elegant space overlooking the glittering Sukhumvit skyline. A pleasantly cool breeze after the earlier rains of the day only served to make the dining experience more pleasurable. The pulsating music added to the entire ambience; the DJ, who is from Spain, captures the mood of patrons quite perfectly with house music, much of it his own mix.
Promoting the Mexican theme, the menu has ceviche with either seabass, octopus or fresh salmon. There’s also Chipotle Alitas on offer, which is chicken wings in a smoky chipotle sauce, Jalea Mixta, the fresh catch of the day served with homemade Amarillo mayonnaise and, for vegetarians, there’s Vegetable Tostada with a zesty salsa verde or Cauliflower Pop accompanied by a spicy tofu sauce.
I went to Mojjo on a Tuesday night, which was Taco Tuesday, where the special menu offered a choice of raw tuna, prawn, crispy duck or beef tongue tacos. A taco sampler is priced at 590baht. There’s also a set menu of the duck tacos and Hola Oaxaca cocktail priced at 699 baht. I decided to have the crisp fried prawns, which came on small taco shells with a dollop of guacamole. Dessert is a choice between churros, of course, or Mil Hojas, which is flaky pastry filled with dulce de leche, however, I skipped dessert, as I was enjoying my virgin Mojito too much.
The staff are attentive without being intrusive. If you want to enjoy a night out in the heart of the city in a space that offers exclusivity and a superb view of Bangkok’s scintillating skyline, there’s no place quite like Mojjo to be at.
